Old silo factory made into loft home

I’m always amazed when I come across a loft space that maintains its original architectural charm. It’s so difficult to create something cozy and warm out of a loft that so often exists solely out of brick, cement and exposed pipes. Yet as is evident with Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill’s legendary live/work complex in Barcelona, it can be done.

According to LoftLife Magazine, the renovations began 35 years ago when Bofill discovered an “abandoned cement factory comprised of over 30 silos, underground galleries and huge engine rooms.” But what exists now is a beautifully furnished, open space full of Spanish charm and modern details.

What I love most about this space is the architect’s ability to soften the harsh concrete that exists. Although the walls are almost entirely composed of concrete and stone materials, the decor and furnishings work together to create an unexpected and cozy atmosphere. With casually slip-covered white sofas, canvas slingback seating, warm oriental rugs and soft leather upholstery, textiles and furniture coexist to fabricate a snug setting that feels more homey and less industrial.
